Pallets have become one of the most useful, economical and practical methods of transporting and storing goods that are used by logistics companies.
The possibility of placing goods in blocks to optimise space has undoubtedly been a great step forward in improving the situation of warehouses and the distribution of objects in trucks or vans.
The wide use of pallets has led several manufacturers to create their own types, with different features and functions. This can become a mess when choosing between the different types of pallets which one is best suited to the situation of the company that needs the transport.
That is why it is interesting to know the different types of pallets and their characteristics. That way you can choose the best option at all times.
There are different types of pallets depending on the material they are made of, their measurements or the entrances they have to use the mechanical forklift when moving them. Knowing all this will help you to make the right decisions when considering transport by van or storage at the company’s facilities.
The construction material of the pallets is one of the points where there are more variants and different types. Thus, there are four types of pallets most commonly used depending on their materials:
Made of aluminium or steel, they are designed for the transport of very heavy loads and with the aim of having a very long useful life: as they are not made of a material as organic as wood, they do not suffer from pests and do not splinter or break easily.
Increasingly popular due to their low cost, durability and hygienic characteristics, plastic pallets have excellent weather resistance, making them the ideal choice if they are to be stored outdoors..
Wooden pallets are the most classic and well-known pallets. They are ideal for transporting different types of products and are very cheap. They stand out for being easy to handle and even adaptable to different needs. Due to their materials, they can be easily recovered and rehabilitated.
Designed more for the transport and storage of light products, they are cheap, easy to transport and very efficient to be stored when not in use.
Size is another vitally important point when choosing between the different types of pallets.
The European pallet has very interesting standard sizes. They are set at 120 by 80 centimetres and owe their name to the fact that they are the most commonly used on our continent. The European pallet size is ideal for transporting all kinds of different goods.
American pallets, on the other hand, have slightly larger dimensions and a squarer shape. 120 by 100 centimetres is the standard size for American pallets, which are mainly used in the USA and are therefore usually transported by sea.
The number of pallet entries is also important. It indicates how many places the mechanical forklift can be inserted to move the load.
A two-entry pallet has two opposite open sides. To put it simply, the machine will be able to load them by entering from the left or right, but not from the top or bottom.
Four-entry pallets can be handled from either side. It is undoubtedly one of the best options because it allows for much more efficient, fast and convenient use.
These are the main types of pallets and their characteristics. The European pallet and the American pallet are used interchangeably in many companies today, depending on the volume of the load or the characteristics of the van that is going to make the shipment, although they are usually located in the geographical points to which they owe their name.
